When I think of "bright" I think of the brilliant bright blue sky over Egypt. Yes, there was smog over Cairo and Alexandria, but downriver the air was just amazing. Here's a picture I took of Karnak - the temple famous for its columned hall (think The Spy Who Loved Me), but this is a view from the rear of the temple complex, where you can see Hatshepsut's obelisk still reaching up into the sky.
The obelisks are made of granite, and at the time they were erected, they shone brightly, like a polished granite countertop - dazzling in the Egyptian sun. Thousands of years of windblown dust and sand have abraded the stonework into a dull brown, but imagine what it was like for the ancients, with firelight flickering off the columns at night as the glittering obelisks stretched up into the star-bright sky...
