I think Charles Dickens is one of my favorite authors - even if he hadn't written Nicholas Nickleby, there is always A Christmas Carol. Some of the best lines in literature, in my humble opinion, come from that work.
One of my favorites comes when Scrooge first sees the ghost of Jacob Marley in his rooms, and he is trying to convince himself he doesn't really see a ghost:
"You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!"
Such clever writing. I often mis-quote this, saying, "There's more of gravy than of grave to you, spirit." Fortunately, most people don't have the quote memorized to correct me.
I have seen many versions of A Christmas Carol, both on stage, and on film. While I love Patrick Stewart as Ebeneezer Scrooge (he also reads a wonderful version on audiobook, if you get a chance), my favorite version is The Muppet Christmas Carol with Michael Caine as Scrooge and Kermit The Frog as Bob Crachit and Rizzo The Rat as Charles Dickens.
Now I shall have "No cheeses for us meeces..." stuck in my head...

Aint this about great. First on the list this week and I got a crappy post. Oh well!
Happy Manic Monday Mo.
Later Y'all.

Patrick Stewart's one man show where he does all the voices is a tour d' force, but my favorite of the dramatic versions is George C. Scott because it comes closest to the darkness of Scrooge. OTOH at our house every year we watch the musical "Scrooge" Thank You Very Much
Comment by Sandee (Comedy +) on 7:42 PM
You are so clever Mo. This week was tough. :)

See..now MY GRAVY was Friday on The Couch... LOL
SO I linked to that...it does have sausage in it, but not the same as you had...and it most certainly does not have chocolate in it
Comment by Linda on 11:51 PM
I adore both the Patrick Stewart version and The Muppet version (probably the latter just a smidgen more than the former!).
Have a gravy day!!
Comment by Travis on 12:13 AM

Sorry - my entry is very, very BORING this week. Can't be brilliant every week, I suppose.
Sigh.
Comment by Janna on 2:00 AM
I was going to say I'd never seen the Muppet version, but I must have, because I remember Miss Piggy as Mrs. Cratchit.
I LOVE the Patrick Stewart version. :)

This is a great choice for the gravy theme! Did you have this in mind before you chose gravy or after?
Comment by Turnbaby on 10:33 AM
HA!! Great choice. I do love the Alistair Sims version.
BUT
I also love the Bill Murray film Scrooged and it's take on Dicken's classic.
Great theme sugar.
Smooch

after writing this post all I can think of is mashed potatoes and gravy
Comment by Lorianna on 1:27 PM
Whether he's "Jean Luc" or "Scrooge", Patrick Stuart is the perfect grumpy, uptight Btit. But, I do love the Muppets, especially Miss P. :) Fun post Mo!
Blessings and Hugs,
Lorianna
Comment by Marilyn on 7:34 PM

Comment by Jamie on 9:30 PM
Just a P.S. I may have been the only one who didn't do gravy as white or brown liquid. Stop by if you get the chance.

Thanks for the inspiration!
I ended up using words from three different prompts to inspire a single haiku. Efficient, huh? :)
